Surreal Day (Friday, December 7th, 2007) |
I had sort of a surreal day yesterday. I found out that someone I've been chatting on AIM with off and on for the past several years is actually a very well-known celebrity. Do you ever have those moments where you see someone famous like an actor or singer or the President or somebody, and you wonder what it would be like to have them over for dinner someday, and what kind of things you would want to talk to them about? You know, get to know them personally, get behind the mask they wear on TV, and really talk to them. And then after a moment, you realize it's a completely pointless exercise, because you're never going to meet them, beyond maybe a 15-second autograph signing somewhere in the midst of a sea of hundreds of other people they'll never remember. Well, this is sort of one of those people. I suppose meeting famous people is something you get used to if you meet famous people a lot, just like performing on stage in front of thousands of people is something you get used to after you've done that a few times. I'm comfortable with that because I've done it quite a bit - I may be nervous if I don't feel well prepared with what I'll actually be performing, but the size of the audience or presige of the venue doesn't bother me at all. A lot of people are horribly intimidated by the thought of performing in front of 200 people, let alone 2,000. I did that just last week, but a huge celebrity wanting to talk to me because they were having a bad day and just needed a friend isn't something I'm accustomed to at all. So anyway, now that I know who this person is, I'm trying to sound normal, and just continue having ordinary conversations like we always have, and not magically transform into a whining obnoxious fanboy. The whole situation just feels weird. |
